Darren T. Kimura, President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Kimura is a 15 year serial energy entrepreneur. Over his career he created several companies which he led to multimillion dollar success and liquidity. Mr. Kimura founded Energy Industries in 1994 and Energy Laboratories in 2000. He is experienced in acquisitions having led the purchase of the Quantum Energy companies.
His entrepreneurship accolades include Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year 2000, Inaugural Top 40 under Forty 2000, SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 for California, Hawaii and Arizona, Hawaiian Electric Trade Ally of the Year 2006, Technology Leader of the Year 2006 and Green Entrepreneur of the Year 2007. He has a B.B.A. from the University of Hawaii. He is a Certified Energy Manager, Certified Demand Side Manager, Certified Distributed Energy Professional and Certified Sustainable Development Professional.
John Rei, Chief Operating Officer Mr. Rei brings strong operational leadership to the Sopogy team. In his 5 years as a management consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton, he provided strategic market analysis and business development expertise focused on Hawaii and the Asia Pacific region, most recently in renewable energy initiatives with State and Federal government agencies. Previously, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Special Forces. Mr. Rei graduated in the top 10% of his class with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point , and received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School where his studies focused on operations strategy and general management.
Tim Wong, Chief Financial Officer Mr. Wong's 17 year career has been focused in finance and accounting. Prior to joining Sopogy, he was a Treasury Analyst with Hawaiian Electric (NYSE: HE) where he participated in the company's largest bond issuance and was responsible for the implementation of the company's Sarbanes-Oxley compliance program. Before that he was the Assistant Controller for Spirent Communications Inc. (LSE: SPT), an Assistant Vice President for Central Pacific Bank (NYSE: CPF) and Senior Auditor for KPMG, LLP where he earned his C.P.A. status. He is a certified Real Property Administrator and earned his B.B.A. in Accounting and B.B.A. in Management Information Systems from the University of Hawaii.
Jim Maskrey, Vice President of Business Development and Sales Mr. Maskrey brings 25 years in the energy efficiency and renewable energy experience. He most recently spent 10 years with Hawaiian Electric Company where he served as the Demand Side Management program manager. Previously he worked with DMC as business development manager, and served as the conservation coordinator for the City of Santa Monica. He began his career at the Solar Energy Research Institute now called National Renewable Energy Laboratories. He is the President of the Rebuild Hawaii Consortium, Chair of the Environmental Committee of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and member of the Hawaii Electricity Reliability Advisory Committee. He holds a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara, M.S. in Environmental Planning from Arizona State University and an M.B.A. from the University of Hawaii.
Al Yuen, PhD, Director of Corporate Development Dr. Yuen has led a 20 year career in technology research and manufacturing. He most recently served as General Manager of Coherent Semiconductor, was the Vice President of Sales and Marketing of Emcore Corporation, spent 12 years at Hewlett Packard Corporation and authored "Bill & Dave's Memos" a book based on the culture and writings of Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. Dr. Yuen has founded 2 start-up companies and raised over $30 million in venture financing, amassed an impressive 18 issued US patents and published 50 scientific publications. He attended the University of California Berkeley where he received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and the University of California Santa Barbara where he received his M.S and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.
Susanne Spiessberger, PhD, Lead Scientist Dr. Spiessberger has led a 5 year career in energy research for Energy Industries and its Energy Laboratories and previously at the Natural Energy Institute at University of Hawaii at Manoa where she specialized in energy fuels, hydrogen research and renewable energy systems. She attended the Vienna University of Technology in Austria where she received her B.S. in Technical Physics, her M.S. in Applied and Technical Physics, and her Ph.D. in Technical Physics. She also completed a Post Doctoral curriculum at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Electrical Engineering.
Kip Dopp, Lead Technology Developer
Mr. Dopp has spent over 25 years as an inventor in solar energy technologies. He has been awarded 2 US patents and has received numerous Phase 0 SBIR/STTR initiative grants for Department of Energy and EPA applications. He specializes in designing and developing solar technologies and using solar technologies in process applications such as in more efficient production of ethanol and biodiesel. Prior to joining Sopogy, Mr. Dopp was the director of the Lichen Research center and Rockwell International. He holds a B.S. in Physics from South Dakota Schools of Mines and Technology and a M.S. in Engineering from the University of Utah.

Mr. Kimura has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Sopogy, Inc. since 2006 and is currently its President and Chief Executive Officer. He is a recognized expert in energy systems and has been a speaker for the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Program. He is a member of Hawaiian Electric's Integrated Resource Planning Committee, Co-chairperson of the Hawaii Energy Policy Forum, member of the State of Hawaii's Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) Energy Advisory Group, member of the Governors Innovation Council, a Director on the Hawaii Strategic Development Corp (The State of Hawaii's Venture Capital fund), Chairman of the Board of Energy Industries and is the President and Chairman of PLASMA the largest national association of energy service companies.
Henry C. Montgomery, Director Mr. Montgomery has more than 40 years of experience in financial and corporate management, and currently is the chairman and founder of Montgomery Professional Services Corporation. He has held illustrious positions in Memorex Corporation, Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corporation, McKinsey & Company and Arthur Andersen & Company. Montgomery is the Chairman and Audit Committee member of Swift Energy Company (NYSE: SFY), Chairman of the Board and Audit Committee Chairman of Catalyst Semiconductor, Inc. (NASDAQ: CATS) and is on the Board of Directors of ASAT Holdings, LTD (NASDAQ: ASTT). He’s also active in a number of civic and academic organizations and recently co-authored “Enron Provides Lessons on Audits for Accountants and Public Companies” for the Washington Legal Foundation, and “Directors Need to Set the Tone” for the Silicon Valley Biz Ink. He holds a B.A. degree in Economics from Miami University in Oxford , Ohio.
Eric Martinson, Director Mr. Martinson has over 24 years of institutional investment experience and is the Managing Director of Tradewind Capital Group, Inc., a private equity, real estate investment and asset management company. Prior to joining Tradewind Capital, Mr. Martinson was the Managing Director and co-founder of MN Capital Partners, LLC following a successful career at Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate, where he was Director of the Financial Asset Division responsible for its diverse, multi-billion dollar financial asset portfolios. Mr. Martinson currently serves on the boards of several private companies and is active on the boards and leadership of numerous community and non-profit organizations. He holds a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Hawaii and an M.B.A. from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
Peter "P.J." Lee, Director Mr. Lee has over 15 years of institutional investment experience and is
the Managing Director and Portfolio Manager of Black River Asset
Management, an independently run global asset management company that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cargill. Prior to joining Black River, Mr. Lee spent nearly ten years in Silicon Valley as a senior investment
banker at merchant banking firms CE Unterberg, Towbin and Robertson Stephens where he advised and raised capital for dozens of companies in the technology sector. Mr. Lee also spent several years as a project finance banker specializing in the power generation sector at Chase Manhattan in both New York and Hong Kong. Mr. Lee currently serves on the boards of several private companies in the renewable energy sector as well as non-profit and educational institutions. Mr Lee holds a B.S in Economics from Union College in Schenectady, NY.
